Coulomb blockade in metallic grains at large conductance

چکیده
We study Coulomb blockade effects in the thermodynamic quantities of a weakly disordered metallic grain coupled to a metallic lead by a tunneling contact with a large conductance gT . We consider the case of broken time-reversal symmetry and obtain expressions for both the ensemble averaged amplitude of the Coulomb blockade oscillations of the thermodynamic potential and the correlator of its mesoscopic fluctuations for a finite mean level spacing d in the grain. We develop a method that allows for an exact evaluation of the functional integral arising from disorder averaging. The results and the method are applicable in the temperature range d!T!EC .

Suppression of superconductivity in granular metals.
We investigate the suppression of the superconducting transition temperature due to Coulomb repulsion in granular metallic systems at large tunneling conductance between the grains, g(T)>>1. We find the correction to the superconducting transition temperature for 3D granular samples and films. We demonstrate that, depending on the parameters of superconducting grains, the corresponding granular...
متن کاملStrong Electron Tunneling through Mesoscopic Metallic Grains
We describe electron transport through small metallic grains with Coulomb blockade effects beyond the perturbative regime. For this purpose we study the real-time evolution of the reduced density matrix of the system. In the first part of the paper we present a diagrammatic expansion for not too high junction conductance, h/4πeRt ∼ 1, in a basis of charge states. Quantum fluctuations renormaliz...
متن کاملHow Is the Coulomb Blockade Suppressed in High-Conductance Tunnel Junctions?
We present a theory of the Coulomb blockade for a tunnel junction, with arbitrarily large tunnel conductance but with small channel transmissions, placed in a general electromagnetic environment containing no island. Our model, based on a self-consistent calculation of the complex admittance of the junction, predicts that high tunnel conductances wash out the Coulomb blockade and restore Ohmic ...
متن کاملChapter 2 . Theory of Coulomb Blockade in Semiconductor Devices
The conductance through a small grain weakly coupled to metallic leads shows periodic dependence on the voltage applied to a gate electrode. This phenomenon is observed in both metallic' and semiconductor 2 devices, and is commonly referred to as the Coulomb blockade. This behavior of conductance is caused by electrostatic energy arising due to a change in the charge of the grain (quantum dot) ...

We study Coulomb blockade ~CB! oscillations in the thermodynamics of a metallic grain connected to a lead by a tunneling contact with a large conductance g0 in a wide temperature range, ECg0 e0,T,EC , where EC is the charging energy. Using the instanton analysis and the renormalization-group approach we obtain our main result, the temperature dependence of the amplitude of CB oscillations, whic...
